Allison Ponthier - Faking My Own Death / review
With her debut EP, Allison Ponthier has brought us further into her world, highlighting her anxieties and insecurities as she rises from the ashes a final time.
“Tornado Country follows me / Everywhere I go, it’s gonna be a part of me”, sings Texas-born Allison Ponthier on the last track of her debut EP, Faking My Own Death. As mundane as the underlying sentiment might seem, the realization that you can’t shake off where you come from was a revelation for the twenty-five-year-old. “It took New York to make me a cowboy”, she admits on opener “Cowboy”. Paradoxically, all it took was for Ponthier to be far from home to piece the shards of herself into one cohesive whole–and to find that small-town life in the South affected her a lot more than she suspected.

Catching up on some classics / movie edition
I have been watching a bunch of films I have been meaning to see for the longest time but hadn’t yet. Sharing my favorites out of the recent crop of (re)discoveries:
Mulholland Drive, David Lynch (2001) - extremely Lynch-esque in its approach, as confusing as it’s captivating
Ghost World, Terry Zwigoff (2001) - young Scarjo was cool af
Fences, Denzel Washington (2016) - a dialog-driven play adaptation that highlights Viola Davis’ ability to steal any and every scene she’s in
Taxi Driver, Martin Scorsese (1976) - Robert De Niro was hot
Track of the week: Aquamarine - Hand Habits
Hand Habits has announced their second project of the year, following their Feb. EP dirt. The production on ‘Aquamarine’ is all around a blast: merging evangelical chimes with hurried drum-n-bass hints and bright percussions, the energy it radiates is in sharp contrast with the sluggish vocal delivery. Risky, but the pay-off is huge.
Coastin’ - Victoria Monét
Interlude 1: It’s a small world
Mimi - Big Red Machine (feat. Ilsey)
Please Don’t Leave Just Yet - Holly Humberstone
Interlude 2: Facts
Take My Breath - The Weeknd
From The Garden - Isaiah Rashad (feat. Lil Uzi Vert)
Interlude 3: Perspective
That Life - Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Volví - Aventura, Bad Bunny
Outro: Still no Donda
